Loved this letter, Jill. And I totally agree about divorce stories/memoirs -- why would we not need a particular kind of story?! People have been making over Shakespeare for centuries and Donna doesn't want to read about divorce anymore? C'mon! Also finished The Bear and already want to rewatch it--incredible.

Ahaha so true. Maybe there should be a Shakespearean divorce story?

"as though I’d been found going through her trash" legit lol

White Flag was on constant rotation for me not too long ago - but I've neve listened to anything else by them - checking them out RIGHT NOW.

Glad I could make you laugh. It's what I live for.

I loved this post, Jill. "Those people have no business reading memoir then, in my opinion." EXACTLY! But why have I never thought of it that way before? Thank you for giving voice to something I needed to hear. Also, I'm super excited to check out the Wilder podcast!

Ahh so glad this resonated, Carrie!!

I do STRONGLY dislike any fictional story that ends with a breakup- they feel pointless to me. (That might just be a "me" thing, though.) With nonfiction, though, I agree that there are plenty of stories about divorce that can bring something to the genre that hasn't been done before. I don't think any category of memoir isn't "needed." I'm not a huge fan of memoirs about addiction, but I recognize that they're valuable to a lot of people, and that's true of most types of memoirs.

Everyone is entitled to their reading preferences and quirks! But I think it gets muddy to say "we don't need this" for any kind of story, although admittedly I'm sure I've said similar about another novel where a white man cheats on his wife...but again, personal bias!

Those for me, too, actually! There's WAY too much fiction about people cheating on each other. If someone can figure out a way to do it that's new or makes it interesting, well, they should get all the awards.

There’s room in the room. Thanks for that.

I’m totally here for divorce stories. It’s such a major part of life and relationships. Seems strange to think we wouldn’t need them. I’ve been really wanting to read this one, but your review definitely makes me more hesitant now (which is good because my reading wish list goes on forever, and I haven’t actually finished a book in...forever).

Also, I somehow slept on the first season of Bear (I think a lot of people did? I feel like I’m only hearing about it lately) so I have two seasons now to watch and I’m excited! Is it at all cringey or campy? Trying to decide if this will be a solo watch or husband watch and he’s not into cringe and camp.

I would say, especially if it helps you whittle down that to-read list (I GET IT), you can skip this one.

The Bear, on the other hand, is not to be missed! It's intense--lots of yelling and anxiety, especially in season 1, but I wouldn't say it's cringe, and it's definitely not camp at all. So I'd recommend to your husband as well! Enjoy!!
