Update. I also loved the oral history of DSOTR (which I just finished reading). Fascinating!

My mind is blown. But now I guess I understand how all of Ann Patchett’s sentences are perfect?? I am also obsessed with Connections. 👏🏼

They ARE perfect. So yeah...EXTRA annoying that it works for her!

Having had her as a boss (though more in an abstract, not-everyday kind of way)--she is a sparkling, funny, and idiosyncratic person. Do not despair that you are not like her. Having one of her in the world is enough.

Nell! This makes me thrilled to hear. And thank you for the reassurance! :)

Lol my writing process is also clearly being obsessed with Connections. I was ALSO shocked! Though I suspected Patchett did tremendous mulling over of a story before starting to write. I write thousands of drafts!!! I’m trying to get more efficient. Time will tell. Thanks for the shout out, lady!

Yes, I'm sure she does a lot of thinking before (and during!!) she sits down to write. Still....ANNOYING!! C'mon Ann.

Ann Patchett is amazing but also major side eye from me on the no drafts thing. I do Connections and the mini crossword in addition to Wordle every day! So much joy.

So much side eye!!!

I do some editing while I'm in the middle of writing a draft. When I'm finished I do a final edit. The way I see it, writing is like remodeling a kitchen. You have to tear it apart, get everything aligned, and make everything look polished.

Yep. that makes sense to me! Good analogy!

Have missed Early & Alone! This is a particularly good one! I'm reading Tom Lake by Patchett now... I'm with our friend Lauren... side eye from me too! Working on an essay now too - thought I knew what it was about... Nope. I don't think so. Draft #3 coming up...
