Great essay here- I had very similar feelings about John and Anna before and after their divorce. John was my favorite comedian and now I can't watch him at all, because Anna is all I can think about. I haven't read the book yet, but I did see Anna do a reading/interview at the Brattle Theater a couple of weeks ago. It's interesting that John is like the elephant in the room in the book- I don't know if there was a non-disparagement clause in their divorce or if she just didn't want to write about him, but I have to think that the guy she was with for a decade was a bigger influence on her life than some of the brief high school relationships in the book (not the one with the 29-year-old- that one I can see being impactful). Also, WTF with guys who went to Georgetown? Are they all cheating douchebags?
Yes, 100 % agree that he was hovering over the whole enterprise, but I guess it's better that she got to tell at least part of her story the way she wanted to. And I know some guys from Georgetown that are not cheating douchebags, but the ratio might be pretty high!
Love this! Really vulnerable and insightful and fascinating! I feel a lot of similar things about Mulaney, and naturally thought that Tendler’s book would be a tell-all. Super super interesting! 💕
